Paul Pogba had agreed to sign for Real Madrid in 2016 before Manchester United used social media to persuade him to join them instead, according to reports.
The Frenchman left Juventus to rejoin United four years ago but the Red Devils had to pull out all the stops to land their man.
Pogba, 27, has been linked with a move to Real this summer but he nearly made the before, according to United focused journalist Andy Mitten.
He told The Athletic’s Man Utd podcast: “I’ll tell you what happened in 2016, Barcelona were interested but they were put off by the amount of money so they dropped out.
“Paul wanted to join Real Madrid, Paul met Real Madrid and Paul was going to Real Madrid.
“But United to their credit – I wouldn’t say they hijacked it – but they came in and said to Paul that if you go to Real Madrid you’ll be fourth or fifth main man because they’re the best team in the world.
“If you come to United you’ll be the main man and they showed him the number of interactions on social media on when he was linked with United compared to Madrid and United’s numbers blew Madrid’s out of the water.
“Paul bought into that.”

With no end in sight to the coronavirus lockdown, the future of the 2019-20 Premier League season is completely up in the air.
The June 1 deadline for finishing it has been waived and teams can go well into the summer to bring the season to a natural conclusion.
But with the lockdown being extended time and time again, the likelihood of ever being able to finish the season without impacting 2020-21 looks slim.
In fact, there is a growing fear amongst Premier League clubs next season may not be able to start until mid-September.
All 20 clubs are set to meet via video link on Friday to discuss the next steps.
There are a host of scenarios being thrown about as to how to complete the 2019-20 campaign.
Ahead of the meeting, we’ve taken a look at three of the most feasible and how it would affect clubs if the season is NOT deemed null and void.

Man Utd are in a battle with Tottenham for former Arsenal target Thomas Meunier’s signature, with the defender yet to be offered new Paris Saint-Germain deal.
The 28-year-old’s contract is set to expire in June and he has made just 16 Ligue 1 appearances for Thomas Tuchel’s side this season.
The right-back arrived at PSG from Belgian outfit Club Brugge in 2016 but has failed to establish himself as a regular starter.
The defender is set to become a free agent in the summer after struggling to agree to new terms.
According to L’Equipe, Spurs are in pole position to sign Meunier and are regularly keeping tabs on the Belgian ace.

Man Utd are set to turn Old Trafford BLUE in support of NHS heroes fighting coronavirus in an incredible show of unity.
The Theatre of Dreams illuminated only the N, H and S – as well as United – on their Manchester United sign on Wednesday night in support of health workers across the country.
And now they are set to turn the stadium blue, the colour of local rivals Man City, to further their tribute to the NHS.
The colour change will match up perfectly with the latest ‘Clap For Carers’ event at 8pm.
Man Utd have been working hard to help NHS staff during the coronavirus pandemic.
The club have offered up their facilities at Old Trafford to help those in need, while also sending a 16-strong fleet of their foundation’s vehicles to deliver gifts and health supplies to local hospitals.

Man Utd reportedly remain keen on signing Jack Grealish despite the Aston Villa captain’s lockdown break.
The 24-year-old is hot property as he prepares to leave his boyhood club in a big-money move when the season eventually ends.
Grealish has been Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top transfer target as he looks to bolster his Red Devils squad with young, exciting talent.
But he risked wrecking his dream move when he crashed his £80,000 car after being out at an all-night party – just hours after urging everyone to stay at home.
Grealish apologised for his actions and ESPN claim that the ordeal has not put Solskjaer off wanting to sign the £80million-rated Englishman.
The Norwegian has been impressed with Grealish’s leadership skills since he was given the armband at Villa Park.
And he is reportedly confident that his recruitment department’s processes to find out a target’s character off the pitch will answer any outstanding questions.
