The ECHO continue to rate Liverpool’s players for their season so far.
Next up is Trent Alexander-Arnold, a young man reinventing what we think of right-backs and proving a Jamie Carragher theory wrong..
Ian Doyle – 10
It’s remarkable to think it was barely three years ago Alexander-Arnold was thrown in at the deep end for his top-flight full debut at Old Trafford.
In the subsequent period, the 21-year-old hasn’t just become a European and world champion and set new Premier League landmarks for assists from a defender.
Alexander-Arnold has completely redefined the role of the right-back in the modern era, Liverpool’s undoubted playmaker from a position previously almost completely alien to such a concept.
Having started all bar one league game to date this term, he has created 12 assists and popped up with important goals at Chelsea and Leicester City, and set up the late winner for Roberto Firmino in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final against Monterrey in Qatar.
Durable, inventive, possessing an outrageous range of passing, a cute football mind and, just as importantly, continually improving as a defender, Alexander-Arnold has it all.
The enforced break has at least allowed us to appreciate his talent. What a player. And what a campaign – surely the PFA Young Player of the Year.

What can you say about Trent Alexander-Arnold that hasn’t been said already?
Like many in this Liverpool side, the 21-year-old has been a victim of his own success and consistency.
While he is handed deserved praise on a weekly basis, he still doesn’t get the acclaim his performances actual deserve as he continues to make the exceptional look his normality.
12 assists and two goals from right-back is sensational with the only thing stopping him from adding to those numbers this season the Coronavirus pandemic.
