Newcastle United’s prospective new owners will trigger a revolution at the club and turn them into top four challengers.

Sports Direct tycoon Mike Ashley is selling up to a consortium led by financier Amanda Staveley, with the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund taking a 80 per cent stake, and the mega-rich Reuben brothers taking a piece.

Former United midfielder Jermaine Jenas, who starred for the club in the Champions League, says the Saudis will want to “make a splash” and become part of the elite again.

Jenas reckons “ambition stopped” during Mike Ashley’s tenure, and believes the operation now needs “cleansing”.

He said: “If this wealthy consortium is coming in, they are going to spend. They are not going to be bit-part players.

“They are seeing Everton making moves, Wolves making moves, and thinking we want to be part of that.

Former Toon midfielder Jenas hopes to see his ex-club kick on

“Are Spurs losing their grip on what they thought they might have? Arsenal are having a wobble. This is a great period of time to get a club and go for the top four. That is what it is all about.

“Kevin Keegan once famously said Newcastle needed fumigating when he took over.

“It needs a complete restructuring of everything, from top to bottom. You’d need to replace 70 per cent of your playing squad in the next 2-3 years. These are big jobs.

Toon fans will hope to see their side challenge for honours

“You have to bring in sponsorships, invest in the city and get businesses and fans wanting to be involved with Newcastle United again, and a Premier League brand of real stock. That way you can go and spend your money.

“There is a lot of work to do. It needs a cleansing.

“Also bubbling down the line, these investors might be seeing this European Super League thing happening one day. I guess you have to be in a certain position to be part of that conversation.

“Newcastle right now would be cut away with the rest of the Premier League and left to rot.

“Newcastle is the North. They are the beacon club in the North.

“Currently they have that area from Edinburgh down to Sheffield or Burnley, being the only Premier League club. That’s an amazing thought.

“I would hope that they also see what Manchester City have done in terms of changing areas of that city, creating jobs, investment in the academy, surrounding the stadium, all those things to get people working and bring more life to the area.”
