Steve Morrow is on Tottenham’s shortlist to become their new academy chief.

Arsenal legend Morrow, 49, is in the frame to replace John McDermott who left his role as Tottenham ’s head of academy coaching and player development to join the FA as assistant technical director.

Morrow was very highly regarded at Arsenal and is seen as the best candidate who is currently not in a role after the former Northern Ireland international was relieved of his duties last year.

Ex-Arsenal defender Morrow, who famously scored Arsenal’s winning goal in the 1993 League Cup final before being dropped by Tony Adams and injuring his shoulder in the post-match celebrations, had overseen a superb upturn in youth development.

Arsenal have seen Bukayo Saka, Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock and Eddie Nketiah break into the first team while last summer’s sales brought in nearly £50m after Alex Iwobi and Krystian Bielik were sold.

Morrow is regarded as one of the best in Europe which is why his departure was so unexpected after Arsenal’s shake-up which followed head of recruitment Sven Mislintat’s exit and was overseen as technical director Edu putting his own staff in place.

Indeed, the former Arsenal midfielder was the highest-profile casualty of the clear-out rubber-stamped by Edu and academy manager Per Mertesacker last November.

Of those players, Kane and Winks still remain at Spurs and have become integral members of the first-team set-up at the north Londoners, while Rose is out on loan at Newcastle.
