Sixty people have now died after testing positive for the novel coronavirus in Santa Clara County, according to data released by the county’s Public Health Department on Monday.
The Public Health Department reported six new deaths and 45 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Santa Clara County. The coronavirus death toll for the Bay Area’s most populous county has now reached 60, just three days after Santa Clara County’s death toll topped 50.
There have now been 1,666 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Santa Clara County, which has reported at least 40 new cases all but one day during the month of April.
According to data provided by the Public Health Department, 1,053 of the confirmed cases come from San Jose while no other city in the county has had more than 100 to date. Sunnyvale, 91 cases, Santa Clara, 69 cases and Palo Alto, 61 cases, are the other three cities in Santa Clara County with at least 50 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Milpitas (48 cases), Mountain View (34), Morgan Hill (28), Campbell (28) and Gilroy (26) have all had at least 25 cases to date.
The county says 22 of the 60 people who have died in Santa Clara County were members of the Latinx/Hispanic community. Twenty were white, 13 were Asian and four were black.
The number of total cases and COVID-19-related deaths in Santa Clara County continues to climb, but like many other regions around the state, the numbers of hospitalizations and patients requiring care in ICU beds remain relatively steady.
After reporting 185 patients were hospitalized after testing positive for the novel coronavirus on Friday, the Public Health Department said 197 patients were hospitalized on Monday. That number represents a slight increase, but the number of patients in ICU beds has decreased from 76 to 72 since Friday.
With a population of nearly 2 million, the number of COVID-19-related deaths per 100,000 residents in Santa Clara County has now surpassed 3.0, which is the highest rate of any of the Bay Area’s five most populous counties.
Los Angeles County, which has reported 296 coronavirus deaths, also has a death rate per 100,000 residents above 3.0. Those rates are relatively high among the most populous counties in California, but they do not compare to the staggering rates in hard-hit regions across the county such as New York City (85), Orleans County in Louisiana (63) and Wayne County, Michigan (40).
The Public Health Department says 14,956 coronavirus tests have been conducted so far in Santa Clara County. Of those, 193 are awaiting results.
