Health Onondaga Co. coronavirus: Recoveries outpace new infections; ICUs continue climb; 456 total cases - syracuse.com

Health

Syracuse, N.Y. — For only the second time, Onondaga County’s COVID-19 recoveries outpaced new confirmed infections overnight, driving down the number of ongoing infections.

There were 22 recoveries in the past 24 hours, bringing the total people who’ve beaten COVID-19 to 176. Meanwhile, there were 14 new confirmed cases, bringing the total infections so far to 456.

The number of ongoing infections — subtracting deaths and recoveries — stands at 272. That’s down nine from a day ago.

McMahon noted that this is the first time we’ve had more recoveries than new infections since the very beginning. (Dozens of people were considered recovered after the first 14 days of testing. March 30 remains the daily record for recoveries.)

But the county executive said, even if the current trends continue, we’re not ready to reopen the economy. The state won’t reopen until the end of April, at the earliest, anyway.

“We have a lot of work to do,” McMahon warned.

Not all was good news Friday, either. The county announced its eighth COVID-19 death, a hospitalized man in his late 60s with preexisting health conditions, the county said. That was the seventh death in nine days.

“This is just the reality of this virus,” McMahon said. “Once you get it, you’re in for a fight. We’re just very sad … that we lost another neighbor.”

And the number of patients in critical also climbed to a new high, now at 25. That’s two more people fighting for their lives than a day ago.

Overall hospitalizations also jumped, to 49 from 43 a day ago. That’s also a record for Onondaga County during the pandemic, and nearly twice the number from a week ago. On Friday, April 3, there were 26 people in the hospital.

Of the active cases, 18 percent are in the hospital and nine percent are in critical.

“These are people, we need to pray for them and think about them in the days to come,” McMahon said.

In better news, there were 435 tests returned with results overnight, with only 14 positives. That’s a 3 percent infection rate among those tested, far lower than the 7.5 percent average that’s been holding steady in recent weeks.

“This virus is very effective in getting our residents sick,” McMahon said. “It’s very, very potent. This isn’t the flu. It’s much worse.”

There remain 300 tests awaiting results, the lowest number since testing began. However, the numbers of tests sent to labs remained steady, at about 200 new tests.
