OAKLAND — Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Wednesday that large gatherings like sporting events and concerts are unlikely to occur until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, a major blow for one of the world’s major sports and entertainment capitals.

Garcetti offered that perspective when asked today by CNN host Wolf Blitzer about an internal city email published earlier by the Los Angeles Times. That email included a summary written by a Los Angeles Fire Department employee of similar statements made by the mayor during a city meeting.

“Nothing I’ve heard would indicate that we’ll be in those large, thousands-of-people gatherings anytime soon, and probably not for the rest of this year,” he told Blitzer.

Garcetti said while he hoped there was some scenario where public health officials give residents the green light to attend large events, that possibility is unrealistic given lack of available preventive treatments.

“I think we all have never wanted science to work so quickly,” he said. “But until there’s either a vaccine, some sort of pharmaceutical intervention or herd immunity, the science is the science.”

Garcetti said he hoped that even if social distancing measures require residents to avoid stadiums and arenas, that sporting events and concerts will occur without audiences.

His comments echo those of Gov. Gavin Newsom, who said Tuesday that the chances of social gatherings occurring in the near future are “negligible at best until we get to herd immunity and get to a vaccine.”
