    EUR RUNNING LATE

The 2020 Champions League final has been “pencilled in” for August 29, with Uefa planning to complete the continental campaigns AFTER the domestic seasons are finished.

All football in Europe has ground to a halt due to the threat of coronavirus – with Uefa chiefs to meet next Thursday to decide how best to proceed.

One option being discussed would see European competitions being played in a condensed time-frame after domestic leagues are done and dusted, say the Independent.

Should football be given the green light to go ahead in the next month or two, Uefa are likely to complete the season as normal.

In that instance, the Champions League and Europa League – both stuck at the last-16 stage – would be played alongside normal domestic football.

However, should the Premier League and its European counterparts be forced to delay the season well into the summer, Uefa is set to prioritise league action.

In this scenario, all nations would conclude their domestic campaigns, before a quick-fire conclusion to European football.

The Champions and Europa Leagues would then be played out much like the knockout stages of an international tournament, played to its conclusion with no interruptions from other competitions.

    TRAGIC LOSS

Jamaican bobsledder Sam Clayton Jr, who helped inspire the film Cool Runnings, has died from coronavirus aged 58.

Clayton was part of the 1988 Jamaican bobsled team that qualified for the Winter Olympic Games and were seen as major underdogs as they represented a tropical nation in the winter sport.

He was not one of the four competitors that crashed during their final race, but team-mate Devon Harris refered to him as an “integral part” of the group.

The Jamaican bobsled team – who finished outside the medal places – later inspired the 1993 American comedy sports film Cool Runnings which loosely followed their journey in the Calgary Games.

Clayton died from the deadly Covid-19 bug on March 31, as three-time Olympian Harris paid tribute to his former colleague.

He said: “I am saddened by the news of the passing of my teammate Samuel Clayton.

“Although he never made the Olympic team Sammy was an integral part of the Jamaica bobsled team.

“He was among the very first four selected to spearhead Jamaica’s entrance into winter sports and the Winter Olympics.

“He was an amazing human being who will be sadly missed.”

    COPPER LOAD OF THIS

Frank Lampard and wife Christine happily chatted to mounted police as they went for a family stroll on Thursday.

The Chelsea chief and Loose Women presenter, both 41, went for a walk with one-year-old Patricia around London.

And the pair appeared in high spirits as they talked with cops on horseback – checking locals were observing social distancing rules – while enjoying their daily dose of fresh air.

Grinning Lampard clutched a coffee as he sported a casual look, wearing a black Nike hoody and grey joggers, paired with white trainers.

Christine also embraced the casual vibe, wearing cropped jeans with a khaki jacket – completed with some white trainers of her own.

Meanwhile, baby Patricia wore a pink jacket as she was ferried around in a pushchair.

    FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS

Arsenal appear to be edging ever closer to agreeing a pay cut, with one proposal reportedly rejected by a single vote.

David Ornstein wrote for The Athletic: “It is unclear how the players who rejected the proposal, which has not yet been formally signed off by all parties, will be affected.

“The development is a dramatic turnaround given the initial response to the letter sent to the squad via Hector Bellerin, who has acted as a conduit in negotiations owing to his position as the club’s Professional Footballers’ Association representative.

“Each player was invited to reply through WhatsApp with a tick or a cross over the weekend and the result was thought have been 13 in favour and 14 against.”

    JUST MAG-IC

Harry Maguire has been thanked for setting up a scheme for groceries to be delivered to the elderly in his hometown throughout the coronavirus lockdown.

The Manchester United captain, 27, was born in Mosborough, which is part of Sheffield.

And he is determined to help the older residents to get enough food supplies with all their essentials throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

A Twitter user named Jackie Claydon wrote to the England international to thank him for his generosity.

She said: “Thank you so much for your very kind gesture to the older generation of Mosborough. My mum was very appreciative.”

That message was sent along with an image of the pack provided by Maguire.

It included milk and a several vegetables along with a nice addition of a personalised signed card from the defender.

After spotting the tweet, Maguire responded: “My pleasure staysafe.”
