Promotion rivals West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United could be split under plans to regionalise the Championship.
One suggestion being explored amid the coronavirus pandemic is to divide the Championship, League One and League Two into split sub-divisions, reports over the weekend are claiming.
This would be seen as a way of cutting costs of travel and accommodation for clubs who have been hit hard during the crisis.
It would mean clubs would play just 11 homes games in a shortened, 22-match campaign.
Second-placed Albion would make up part of the ‘south’ section, splitting them from league leaders Leeds who would be placed in the ‘north’ half.
The Sun on Sunday states: “A league revamp would involve the 12 teams in each sub-division clashing home and away before coming together for play-offs to decide promotion and perhaps relegation.
“This would, in theory, reduce the risk of the competition having to shut down in the wake of new Covid-19 outbreaks. It would also cut travel and accommodation costs.”
The radical proposal understandably caused a stir on social media and here’s a flavour of the reaction:
Albion fans
Jas Mann: This would be a RADICAL change for sure – it just cannot work – will destroy professional football outside the PL.
Baggiewire: If it is being considered to be played with fans present can we please somehow get into the northern group. Otherwise it would kill away days.
Leeds fans
Arron McCourt: This is the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard.
Phil Hunt: No no no! Crap idea from start to finish as ever, NOT been thought through.
James McGlone: The EFL get dafter by the week.
Gerard Kenney: Every club in the EFL will go to the wall if that happens unless you play every team in your region four times.
Warwick Williams: EFL are clowns man.
