Aston Villa tipped to swoop for this Championship free agent ahead of Premier League campaign - Birmingham Live

Josh McEachran is interesting Dean Smith as Aston Villa’s transfer plans get underway.

The Brentford midfielder, who is formerly a Chelsea trainee, is out of contract with the Bees this summer and is likely to move on.

Villa are said to be interested in his services, say the Sun.

Smith worked with McEachran for a couple of years at Griffin Park and is said to be keen on a reunion at Villa, who are preparing for their return to the Premier League after Monday’s 2-1 win over Derby at Wembley.

McEachran made 22 appearances for the Blues as he bid to break into the Stamford Bridge, but as a teenager and a midfielder in his earlier twenties he spent plenty of time out on loan.

Spells at Swansea, Watford and Wigan didn’t represent much game-time, but he played pretty much an entire Championship season under Tony Mowbray at Middlesbrough.

Only when McEachran, now 26, cut ties with Chelsea and made his way to Brentford did he finally discover an opportunity to play regularly, with the security of a permanent contract.

Not known for his goalscoring (McEachran has netted a single goal in 2016 career appearances) he flourished under Smith as the Bees made an impression on the Championship.

His current deal is up this summer, though, and the idea to reunite with Smith and Premier League Villa would certainly be an attractive proposition.

Villa have also been linked with Bees striker Neal Maupay and the recently made free agent Yoann Barbet.
