  1. Post update

Quinton de Kock was given out, caught behind, off the seventh ball of the match.

But the South Africa opener rightly reviewed straight away, DRS showing it hit his arm, nowhere near the bat.

Not the best umpiring decision you’ll ever see…

And De Kock had started to get into his stride before the rain, smacking this superb cut shot for four…

Let’s have a look at the highlights so far…

  3. Post update

This is going to be my excuse when I get out now – “Not my fault, it’s literally impossible to bat.”

For South Africa it’s a familiar situation with Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock having to do the recovery. They are in trouble so often.

Generally these two get them out of trouble. Will the weather benefit them? The stop-start nature will prevent either side getting any momentum.

A shorter game may also favour the West Indies.

The TV graphics suggest there will be an update at 12:00 BST.

When Duckworth-Lewis comes into play it often favours teams batting second, so that is another reason why West Indies wanted to bowl. I live in Brighton and it rained solidly through my drive to Southampton this morning.

  8. Post update

This delay (and likely to be multiple delays today) will benefit West Indies.

It’ll be tough for the South Africa batsmen to get going again each time.

Plenty of brollies up in the crowd now. The hover cover is on the pitch and out comes the big white tarpaulin.

  9. rain-stops-play

    It’s spitting.

Not too heavy, but heavy enough for the umpires to call for the covers, perhaps very aware that more rain is close by.

    Shame.

  10. SA 29-2

And now there’s a lengthy delay in the match as something or someone is proving distracting behind the bowler’s arm.

The rain is on its way people! Hurry up!

  11. Post update

First bowling change for West Indies – Oshane Thomas is in for Kemar Roach…

    Tymal Mills

Sussex bowler on Test Match Special

Definitely not what you need, Sheldon Cottrell has been very impressive. He’s a bit ginger on his knee.

  13. Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis is in and looks to get off the mark with a quick single but sends Quinton de Kock back.

De Kock dives but the throw in from Darren Bravo is abysmal, slinging over the middle of the pitch instead of anywhere near the stumps. De Kock was probably back in time anyway.

Sheldon Cottrell then starts holding his knee – West Indies really don’t need another injury to a fast bowler, with Andre Russell out today.

He’s fine to carry on though and completes a superb wicket maiden.

    Markram c Hope b Cottrell 5 (SA 28-2)

    Salutin’ Sheldon has two!

And it’s a strangle down the leg side, Aiden Markram clipping a ball off his ribs round the corner, where tumbling keeper Shai Hope completes the catch.

Markram stomps off, a sickening way to get out that.

Joy for West Indies, they sense another chance to run through a fragile top order.

Not the best decision from an international umpire this…

  16. SA 28-1

Good work from Kemar Roach, just three from the over.

    Sir Curtly Ambrose

Former West Indies bowler on BBC Test Match Special

You didn’t see fast bowlers diving in the field like that in my day! I am 6ft 8ins – it was a long way down.

  18. SA 25-1

    De Kock 14, Markram 4

Cottrell strays wide and De Kock cuts away towards the boundary, only missing out on four thanks to a fine dive by Roach.

That is four though. More width from Cottrell and De Kock smacks it rapidly through point.

  19. SA 19-1

Zap! Sheldon Cottrell rushes Quinton de Kock with a fierce, well-directed bumper that the South Africa opener can only fend up off the gloves. The ball lands safe though.

  20. SA 17-1

Shot! Aiden Markram gets off the mark with a delicious drive through the covers for four.
