This is below the level you expect of South Africa, certainly. Preparation was the key. They knew they would have three tough games first up and I just don’t think they prepared enough.

  2. Ooft! A firm push down the ground from Andile Phehlukwayo and it just evades a leaping Yuzvendra Chahal in his follow-through.

Tidy enough from the South African batsman, but they can only nurdle a smattering of singles.

I can’t remember a South African side struggling this much.

  4. Post update

Cheers JL. South Africa look an absolute shambles.

    Yuzvendra Chahal will continue.

  5. Kuldeep again and they can only manage singles. Some theories that the empty seats are due to the ground being difficult to get to. I’m not sure about that but I do know full well that the M27 is peppered with the eyesores of the modern age, the giant yellow average speed camera. Anyway, here’s Amy Lofthouse to tell you what happens in the remainder of the innings.

Phehlukwayo is not a guy who will knock the ball around and go for singles. He likes to be positive. Sticking to his natural game plan is key for him to be successful.

  7. Not just the five wickets – but there are not many high-rise blocks on this chart so far are there? Another left-hander in Andile Phehlukwayo, who has one fifty in his 45 matches. despite the earlier loss of VDD to the dreaded reverse sweep, 23-year-old AP employs it to good effect and gets off the mark with a boundary.

The spinners are ripping a hole in this middle over. Duminy looked nowhere. He was caught a couple of times and he wasn’t sure of the length, moved on to his off stump, and it’s a great bit of bowling.

Replays showed it would have shattered into leg-stump. The review is lost and so is the fifth wicket.

  10. Post update

No bat involved and the Indian cheers escalate.

  11. Post update

Duminy has been given out lbw but South Africa decide to gamble and use their review.

As balcony views go, this one’s not too bad if you’re an India fan right now.

Test Match Special are broadcasting from the third floor of the in-ground hotel here during this World Cup.

Here’s Prakash Wakankar and Michael Vaughan pictured a bit earlier on during their commentary stint.

Looking more like a case of Heartbreak Hotel from a South Africa perspective at the moment.

  13. Chahal, two wickets in his previous over, continues the pressure. Although there are a few empty seats at the ground formerly known as the Rose Bowl, there is plenty of noise from the fervent Indian contingent.

What is a good total now? You walk into these World Cup games and you’re thinking over 300 but maybe this isn’t a 300 surface. We’ve seen spin, a bit of extra bounce, a bit of extra nip. Partnerships are the key now, they have to get something going.

  15. Two left-handers at the crease now as JP Duminy joins Miller and our graphic informs us he has taken a middle stump guard against the left-arm wrist spin of Kuldeep. A smattering of singles and the run-rate remains modest.

That is just class bowling. The length is good, Du Plessis plays forward, and the ball went through the gap.

This is another beauty and it claims the big wicket of the captain, drifting in and sliding between his bat and pad.

Aggressive left-hander David Miller is the new batsman. He has struck 82 sixes in his 121 ODIs, with 12 fifties. That was a good ball by Chahal for the wicket by the way. Aside from the injudicious stroke it spun sharply.

Just as South Africa were building something, a wicket falls. It wasn’t the time for that shot.

The reverse sweep. When it doesn’t work it really doesn’t look very good. And this didn’t work. You’ll see for yourselves very soon with our in-play highlights.
