Middlesbrough look set to rival West Brom in the pursuit of striker Dwight Gayle, as both sides target another push for the Premier League next season.
Gayle enjoyed a fruitful loan spell with the Baggies in the 2018/19 campaign, scoring 24 goals as West Brom reached the play-off semi-final.
However the Baggies look set to face competition in the race to sign the striker permanently, as Sky Sports report that Middlesbrough are eyeing a move for the Newcastle man.
Boro scored just 49 goals in the Championship last season, the lowest total from the top 15 sides in the division, and are said to be eyeing a move for Gayle in an attempt to increase that tally next time out.
The striker was part of a loan swap deal that saw Baggies forward Salomon Rondon move to Newcastle United until the end of last season while the 28-year-old spent the campaign with West Brom.
Newcastle are reportedly keen on signing Rondon permanently this summer and the Baggies will be hoping to agree a deal that includes Gayle moving to the Hawthorns in a permanent swap.
Four alternative strikers West Brom could consider
Leo Bonatini
Bonatini struggled for game time during his unsuccessful loan spell with Nottingham Forest last season, and appears surplus to requirements at Wolverhampton Wanderers, meaning the Baggies could pick the striker up for a relatively cheap fee.
Andy Carroll
Carroll is set to leave West Ham this summer upon his contract expiry, and could be a shrewd signing for the Baggies.
James Wilson
Wilson is also available on a free transfer this summer, and the 23-year-old is another who would strengthen the Baggies’ attacking options.
Neal Maupay
Maupay would certainly go some way to replacing Gayle should the Baggies miss out on the Newcastle man.
