Deaths from strokes fall 55 per cent in a decade - The Times

Deaths from strokes have more than halved in a decade as new treatments and better care transform patients’ chances of survival.

Clot-busting drugs, stroke units and the provision of physiotherapy at home are all credited with saving lives.

Healthier lifestyles and drugs to cut blood pressure and cholesterol are also thought to have contributed to deaths from strokes in England falling by 55 per cent between 2001 and 2010.

Olena Seminog of the University of Oxford, a lead researcher on the study, said: “This is a big success for the healthcare system and very good news for the country and should be applauded.”

Stroke rates are increasing in young people, however, with numbers rising by 2 per cent a year in the under-55s.
