The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) have released a confusing statement surrounding general coordinator Edu.
Sky Sports reported in January that Edu, who spent for years with Arsenal, was poised to takeover from Arsenal’s head of recruitment Sven Mislintat.
The move though never materialised, but only yesterday The Guardian reported that Edu had agreed in principle to become Arsenal’s technical director this summer.
The 40-year-old is currently working for the Brazil national side, “but is ready to join the Premier League club after the Copa América, which ends on 7 July”.
Now the CBF have confirmed an approach for the former midfielder, who played for the Gunners between 2001-2005, from an “English club”.
Arsenal were not named specifically but the statement, which was rather confusing, did state he is under contract until 2022 and “solely focused” on the Copa America, before then highlighting qualities of a potential successor.
“Co-ordinator Edu Gaspar has a current contract with the CBF until the end of the Qatar World Cup in 2022,” a CBF statement read.
“Edu Gaspar informed the CBF that he received an offer from an English club but explained at the moment that he is solely focused on Brazil’s matches at the Copa America.
“The CBF, therefore, denies any speculation around names for the position of coordinator. We’re clear about the qualities required for this position which brings together an administrative capacity and experience on the field.”
