Arsenal board make Unai Emery sack decision after losing Chelsea Europa League final - Express

Arsenal boss Emery saw his side lose 4-1 to Chelsea in the Europa League final on Wednesday night, meaning they will not be rubbing shoulder with the world’s elite in the Champions League next season.

The Gunners went into the game knowing that, after finishing fifth in the Premier League table, they simply had to win.

However, Arsenal were no match for Chelsea in Baku with the Blues winning courtesy of a brace from Eden Hazard and further strikes from Olivier Giroud and Pedro.

Some Gunners fans have called for Emery’s head in the wake of their nightmare season.

But the Daily Mail say Emery’s position at the Emirates is not under the threat.

The Arsenal board knew his first season would be one of transition following the departure of Arsene Wenger a year ago.

However, the Daily Mail add there are ‘dissenting’ voices behind the scenes who believe Emery has failed to take the club forward.

Arsenal are keen to see the Spaniard succeed, though, and hope a technical director would hope.

The Gunners were previously hopeful of landing transfer expert Monchi, whose stock is high in European football.

But he ended up choosing to quit Roma for Sevilla instead.

Edu, who was part of the Arsenal side that won the Premier League title under Wenger 15 years ago, is in the frame to return instead.

Emery called for Arsenal fans to back him on Wednesday night after the Chelsea horror show.

“We knew it would be difficult, and we are in our process. I want to say to all the supporters we are in this process,” he said.

“Really the first target has not been achieved this year, but I think we are closer, firstly in the Premier League, and second in this competition, playing the final.

“Next year is a big challenge for us to take one more step on our way, in our will with the young players.

“We are disappointed today, but in general, I think we made a new step improving and being competitive.

“We’ll have to take one more step next year.”

Who could succeed Unai Emery if he were to leave Arsenal?

Massimiliano Allegri – Popular among the fans and a serial-winner at Juventus.
