Manchester United will have to fork out £14m to axe flop midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger – but he is refusing to quit the club. The German midfielder had a disastrous first season at Old Trafford and barely featured after a spate of injuries.

United are looking at ways to axe the 31-year-old, but will have to pay the remaining two-years left on his contract.

He has also told officials at the club’s Carrington training complex he is happy in Manchester and wants to stay and fight for his place.

Schweinsteiger has spoken with new boss Jose Mourinho but talks were brief over his future at Old Trafford.

A United source said: “Bastian will cost every penny of the £14million still owed to him on his two-years left.

“He has had talks with Jose over his future but it is still uncertain at this stage. The new few weeks will reveal more.

“He will not be pushed out and will sit tight for pay-off.”

United have already had a number of enquires from Germany and Italy for Schweinsteiger.

Paris Saint Germain have also been keeping a close eye on his situation as they believe he could help with shirt sales and their global brand.

The former Bayern ace is away on holiday after getting married to tennis star Ana Ivanovic this week.

He is set to miss United’s pre-season tour of China after representing Germany at Euro 2016.

He is expected to return for the Galatasaray friendly on July 30 in Gothenburg Schweinsteiger made just 18 appearances and scored one goal for the Red Devils last season.

He joined them from Bayern – where he played for 13 years – in 2015 for around £15m.
