Customer imprisoned for stealing bar owner’s handbag

A Kado Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja on Thursday sentenced a customer of a palm wine bar to seven months imprisonment for stealing the bar owner’s handbag containing N10,000.

Bitrus Joel, 21, a resident a Jabi, Daki Biyu Village, was convicted following his guilty plea to the charge of stealing leveled against him.

The judge, Malam Mohammed Ado, however, gave the convict an option of paying N15,000 fine in lieu of the term in prison.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Judith Obatomi, had told the court that one Lucy Ishaya of Jabi Daki Biyu Village, Abuja, reported the matter at Life Camp Police Station on June 19.

Obatomi said that the convict had gone to Ishaya’s shop and requested for four litres of palm wine.

The prosecutor said that after finishing the initial order, Joel again requested for two litres of palm wine.

She said that when Ishaya left her bar unattended to use the restroom, the convict grabbed her bag containing N10,000 lying on the table and bolted with it.

Obatomi said upon Ishaya’s return, she discovered her bag had been stolen and raised an alarm, which led to the pursuit and arrest of Joel.

The prosecutor said that the convict was handed to the police, who recovered the stolen bag from him.

She said that the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.
