NUJ threatens to boycott PDP, police activities over attack on journalists

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council has condemned the unwarranted attack on journalists who went to cover the 2016 National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the Sharks Football Club Stadium, Port Harcourt by political thugs and men of the Nigerian Police.


In a statement signed by Anayo Onukwugha, the State Assistant Secretary of to NUJ said “As we write, one of the victims of the brutality unleashed by political thugs and policemen, Ibim Walson Asako, who is the chairman of Radio Rivers Chapel of the Union is still lying ill in the hospital.


“We observed that of recent, journalists in the state, who are out to perform their official and constitutional duties, have become targets of attack by security agents and political thugs.


“We demand apology from those responsible for the provision of security and protocol during the the PDP National Convention, especially, the leadership of the PDP and the Rivers State Police Command.


“Finally, we may be forced to take drastic measures, which includes mobilizing our members to commence boycott of all activities of the PDP and the Rivers State Police Command, if no apology is tendered to the Union within seven days from today.”


It would also be recalled that some journalists were brutalised and a car of one of the Journalist’s vandalized during the March 19 legislative rerun election in Ogoniland by suspected party thugs of unidentified political parties.
