The gavel of justice
For being in possession of illegal firarms, a Jos Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday sentenced four men to 18 months imprisonment each.
The men – Jonathan Yakubu, Walshak Sale, Ezra Bulus and Panshak Dami, all residents of Bokkos, were sentenced by Magistrate Tijanni Zololo.
The convicts had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and illegal possession of firearms.
The prosecutor, Mr Chirkwak Samuel, had told the court that the quartet were arrested in Bokkos, on April 20, with five locally made revolver pistols.
“The suspects had no license for the arms; when we conducted a search in their houses, we found 7.62 live ammunitions and they could not give any satisfactory explanation as to how the arms came about.”
He said that the offence contravened Section 97 sub-section 279 (a) of the Penal Code Law.
The four men pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency.
Zololo, in his judgment, jailed them 18 months each without option of fine, to serve as deterrent to others tempted to commit the same crime.
