Players smile to bank, as WGB Lagos FA Cup ends with fanfare

Smile was all over the faces of the outstanding players during the finals of the 2016 edition of Lagos FA Cup proudly sponsored by Winners Golden Bet (WGB) as they were rewarded with various cash awards courtesy of the sponsor.


The grand finale was played at the Agege Stadium on Sunday with football fans coming in their large numbers to watch best of Lagos football.


Spiced up with entertainment from some notable Nigerian artistes, the final match in the men’s category was won by the Nigeria Professional Football League club side, MFM FC who hammered Bridge Boys in a duel that ended 4-0.


The women’s crown was won by Robo Queens who defeated C. O. D. Queens 3-0 in the final. Rashidat Olaide, who plays for the country’s U-17 Flamingoes scored a hat trick to give Robo Queens the victory.


In fulfilment of its promises, the sponsor, Winners Golden Bet (WGB), Nigeria’s leading sports betting company, gave various cash awards to players for their outstanding performance in the tournament.


A total sum of N320,000 was given to players who made impacts in the tournament on the final day, while prize money of N2 million was shared between the winners and runners up in both the men and women categories.


The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the final match was won by Ifeanyi Ifeanyi of MFM, who was rewarded with the sum of N50,000. Olaniyi of Bridge FC, won the Highest Goalscorer award and got a cash prize of N100,000.


Deji Alo of Messiah FC was adjudged as the Most Valuable Player of the championship and he received a cash gift of N100,000, while the Best Goal Keeper of the tournament award was won by Aliu of Bridge Boys and was given the sum of N50,000. He conceded only four goals throughout the competition.







In the female category, the M.V.P of the final match between C.O.D and FC Robo Ladies was given to Rasheedat Ajibade of FC Robo Ladies, with a cash prize o N25, 000, Highest Goal Scorer award of the tournament was won by Yetunde Fajobi of Young Talent FC, with a cash prize of N50, 000.


The M.V.P of the tournament was won by Folashade Ijamiusi of Young Talent FC, with a Cash prize of N50, 000, while the Best Goal Keeper award of the tournament was won by Ademola Morufat of Young Talent FC, with a cash prize of N25, 000.


The champions, MFM received N1m, runners up, Bridge Boys got N500,000. The women champions, FC Robo Ladies pocketed the sum of N300,000, while runners up, C. O. D Queens got the sum of N200,000.


Also present was the Special Adviser on Sports to the Governor of Lagos State who is also the Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Deji Tinubu, Chairman of Lagos FA, Mr. Seyi Akinwunmi, management of WGB represented by the Director of Finance, Mr Ademoyo Gbenga, General Manager, Mr Sajimi Ayodele, Assistant General Manager Mr Adedeji Beecroft and other staff of Winners Golden Bet as well as some dignitaries in Lagos football family.


Senator Seye Ogunlewe commended the Seyi Akinwunmi led board of the Lagos State FA for working hard to bring back football to the state with the qualification of two clubs, MFM FC and Ikorodu United for the Nigeria Premier League and also organizing a befitting FA Cup finals.


He also commended the sponsor for given back to the society by sponsoring the FA Cup in the last three years, urging other companies to emulate, WGB.


Head Coach of MFM FC, Fidelis Ilechuckwu said “I am very happy for winning this trophy we have been targeting for years, thank God we won it at last”.


He praised his players for doing well “and also playing according to our plan, I am very proud of them because this FA Cup means a lot to me. I want to give kudos to the sponsor and the FA Cup for a job well done,” he said.
