The Police at Lion Building Division, Lagos Island, Lagos, southwest Nigeria have arraigned a thirty-five year old man, Ime Mathew Akpan before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court for allegedly having unlawful sex with his wife’s sister without her consent.
According to the police, the incident occurred on 10 April, 2016 at 3/5 Moloney Street, Lagos Island where the man reside with the victim, (name withheld), a 15-year old primary student.
Akpan allegedly used a towel to cover the mouth and face of the victim and forcefully had sex with her after his wife had travelled.
It was learnt that when the victim could not withstand the rigours of the sex anymore, she ran out of their apartment to the Lion Building police Division to report the sexual assault to the DPO of the Station, CSP Antonia Tanaruno.
Following the report, the DPO, it was gathered despatched a team led by Inspector Raimi Ologe to go after the randy man and arrest him.
After searching for him, he was eventually found at a hideout and back taken to the Station.
During his parade before pressmen at the Police Headquarters, Ikeja, the CP, Lagos State Police Command, Fatai Owoseni, said the suspect allegedly confessed that he raped his sister-in-law because he was drunk.
Negating his claims, the minor said the victim told pressmen that her sister’s husband raped her on two occasions.
The accused was arraigned on a three-count charge of felony to wit, indecent and unlawful sexual assault on a 15-year old girl.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Asu Feddy said the offences the accused committed are punishable under sections 70,135(1) and 137 of the criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused however pleaded not guilty to the alleged crime in court.
Presiding magistrate admitted him to bail in the sum of N1m with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to 11 May, 2016 for mention.
The magistrate directed the prosecutor to send the case file to the DPP’s office at Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos for advice on the matter while the defendant was taken to Ikoyi prison, Lagos pending when he will fulfil his bail conditions.
