300 traders storm court, protest arraignment of their chairman

The premises of Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, southwestern Nigeria was rowdy on Monday when about 300 traders of the Indigenous Manufacturing and Dealers of Footwears Association (IMADFA) from Trade Fair market, Ojo, Lagos stormed the Igbosere magistrates’court.


The traders arrived the court premises in five Coaster buses to protest the alleged unlawful arrest and arraignment of their Chairman, Ikenna Enendu, 45, before the court for theft of N5m and for malicious damage.


Enendu was arraigned before the court by the police at Zone 2 Command, Lagos on a five-count charge of felony to wit, stealing, malicious damage and assault.


Police prosecutor, Innocent Odugbo informed the court in charge No N/21/2016 that the accused committed the alleged crime on 13 November, 2015 at the Lagos International Trade Fair complex of progressive Traders wing, Ojo, Lagos.

Odugbo told the court presided over by magisrate, Mrs O.M Ajayi that the accused stole the sum of N5m from one Tony Chan, a Chinese citizen.


Enendu was also alleged to have maliciously damaged to a Nissan Jeep and assaulted Mr Nnodi Okoye, the CSO of Association of Progressive Traders of Nigeria.


Odugbo said that the offences committed are punishable under sections 409, 385, 338, 44(4) and 173 of the criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.


Ikenna Enendu however denied the police allegations in an open court.


The lead counsel to the accused, Barr Tochi Godwin Ekwuogo prayed the court to admit his client to bail on the most liberal terms with a promise that he will not jump bail because is the Chairman of IMADFA, Ojo, Lagos.


Mrs Ajayi admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to 26 May, 2016 for mention.
