More deaths as Boko Haram roadside bombs kill five in Borno village

 – A local vigilante group helping Nigerian soldiers in the war against Boko Haram insurgency in Borno state lost three of its members


– The vigilante members were on their patrol vehicle when they stepped on a bomb planted on the road


– Two civilians were killed in Huyum village in Askira Uba local government area of the state in a shootout that ensued between vigilante members and ambushing Boko Haram members

More deaths have been recorded following roadside bombs unknowingly detonated by members of a local vigilante group assisting the Nigerian soldiers in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency in Borno state.

Premium Times reports that the deaths occurred on March 15 but was brought to public notice on March 16.


An official of the vigilante force, who spoke to newsmen this afternoon, said three operatives were killed while two civilians from Huyum village in Askira Uba local government area of the state were also killed in a gun battle that ensued between surviving vigilante operatives and ambushing terrorists members.


The state’s vigilante group spokesman, Abbas Gava, in telephone conversation with journalists, said his colleagues were in a patrol vehicle when they stepped on an explosive device planted on the road at Huyum village.


Gava said: “It was in the afternoon of Tuesday when our members in Askira Uba local government area were going on patrol, oblivious of the ambush attacked planned by Boko Haram, their vehicle stepped on a bomb buried in the middle of the road.


“Three of our members were killed instantly while others engaged the terrorists in shootout. The terrorists opened fire on fleeing villagers and two persons were killed.


“As I’m talking to you now, our members have joined soldiers in hot pursuit of Boko Haram who were fleeing towards Sambisa Forest.”

Earlier this morning, March 16 two female suicide bombers detonated themselves during prayers at a mosque in the Umurari area of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. The attack claimed the lives of no fewer than 25 Muslim worshippers and injured 18.


The first bomber reportedly blew her self up inside the mosque, while the second blew herself up outside as survivors tried to flee the scene.
