A Lagos landlady, Oladunni Sodipo, who allegedly disconnected water and electricity supply to her tenant’s flat over unsettled rent, was on Wednesday docked at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
The 53-year-old accused, who resides No. 2, Ai-Allis School Close, Temple Road, New Oko-Oba in Agege, Lagos, is being tried for breach of peace and wilful damage.
The Prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb. 22 at her residence.
He said the accused disconnected water and electricity supply to the tenant’s apartment and also damaged one of the doors.
Nwosu said the accused made good her threats to frustrate the complainant, Mrs Modina Imoro, out of the house.
“The accused deliberately damaged the entrance door of the complainant’s apartment to leave her house.
“After the complainant had replaced the damaged door, the accused came again to change the lock of the door while the complainant was fast asleep in the night.
“The complainant woke up to discover that the accused had locked her inside her flat with another key.
“The complainant then called her brother, who came with a welder to rescue her,” he said.
The offence contravened Sections 166 and 348 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 166 provides three months imprisonment or N45, 000 fine, while Section 348 stipulates two years for wilful damage.
The landlady pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Mr A.A. Adesanya, granted the landlady bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.
The case was adjourned to April 18 for mention.
