Candidates writing JAMB examination using Computer-Based Test (CBT) system
An educationist, Mr Ishaya Tabat, on Monday said that the decision by the National Examinations Council (NECO) to adopt Computer-Based Test (CBT) for its examinations would force governments to equip public schools.
Tabat, a lecturer with Kaduna State College of Education Gidan Waya, said presently, students of most public schools especially in rural areas have no access to computers to work with.
He told NAN in Kaduna that it was time for all levels of government in Nigeria to take the issue of computer knowledge more seriously.
The lecturer attributed the low penetration of Information Technology facilities in the country’s public schools to poor funding and urged for more robust allocation to the education sector.
Tabat said that governments must also recruit more computer study teachers as well as build and equip computer laboratories, especially in rural areas.
“Otherwise, the rural populace would be schemed out of the nation’s education system.
“The plans by NECO to migrate to CBT will go along way in forcing governments to equip all public schools with computer laboratories,” he added.
He described IT knowledge as critical to literacy in the current digital age which Nigerian students must be given the opportunity to access.
“Literacy in current global trend is defined in relation to one’s ability to use computer, anything short of that, you are not part of the literate world.
“Therefore, the younger generation must equip themselves with computer skills to be competitive,” Tabat said.
