Georginio Wijnaldum inspired Newcastle to a very important win against high flying Liverpool at the St James Park to save Steve McLaren’s blushes.
The Dutch attacking midfielder’s first effort deflected off Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel in the 69th minute before he finally got his name on the score sheet in the 90th minute to seal all three points.
Under fire McLaren will be relieved that Liverpool could not repeat their away heroics at St James Park.
Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp has played high football beating both Chelsea and Manchester City comprehensively away from home but they could not repeat the feat against a stuttering Newcastle side.
After the game Wijnaldum said: “It’s a really big result because we’ve had a few poor weeks. We reacted well today. We played as a team. It was difficult for Liverpool to create chances. We learned from the last two weeks where the performance was not good.
“When you play at home you want the fans behind you and you must give them something back.
“Sometimes you need luck to score a goal. The first bit of luck was the ball staying at my feet. After that I shoot. He touched it – I still think it’s my goal because I’ve shot on goal.
“It’s always important and good if you win games because it will give you confidence. We must know we won’t win games easily. We must fight like we did today.”
Stuttering Newcastle ends Liverpool’s mojo
