President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, December 1, met with African leaders from Ghana, Guinea, Mali and Niger and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference, widely known as COP 21, in Paris, France.
Buhari was welcomed by Ban Ki Moon who was accompanied by President Francoise Hollande of France at the opening of the United Nations Climate Change Conference.
The issue of Lake Chad’s current depletion, which has become a cause of international concern, was one of the topics discussed during the meeting.

President Buhari on Monday, November 30, while speaking at the leaders event of the United Nations climate change conference, said climate change has continued to pose a threat to Nigeria’s security and development.
He called on world leaders to forge a united front to save Lake Chad’s ecosystem from further depletion caused by the adverse effects of climate change.

However Nigerians have criticized Buhari over his frequent trips, saying that there is a lot to be done inside the country, due to crushing fuel scarcity, continuous attacks by Boko Haram insurgents, and blackouts which demand immediate and focused attention.
According to reports, a normal two-day long trip by the president reportedly rates between $350K and $500K. For example, during the last presidential trip to Tehran, the capital of Iran, the travel expenses for accompanying presidency officials was $105K. Furthermore, transportation budgets stood at $45K, accommodation $200K, allowance $10K, contingency $20K, with media coverage costs at $10K.
