Hon Yakubu Dogara, House of Reps Speaker
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on Thursday urged both Christians and Muslims to take advantage of the opportunity presented by Christmas and Maulud festivities to pray for peace, unity, and progress of the country.
The advice was contained in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Speaker on Media and Public Affairs, Mr Turaki Hassan, and made available to newsmen in Abuja.
He said that Nigerians had every reason to thank God for making it possible for the country to witness the two festivals in the face of multiple challenges.
“Christmas is a period for us to individually and collectively reflect on whom and what made the occasion necessary.
“Our values, virtues, and ideals of unity, peace, godliness, and tolerance, which Christ advocated and exemplified during his earthly ministry.
“I call on Christian faithful to embrace the reason for Christmas and to imbibe these virtues and ideals for the rebirth of our nation.
“We should resolve to apply these elements in the current administration’s change agenda for the development of our dear nation in spite of the challenges we are faced with.
“I urge you all to have abiding faith as we must work together to surmount our problems and forge ahead as a nation.
“On our part, the House of Representatives is determined more than ever before, to pass people-oriented legislations that will help guarantee the much needed and desired change.
“I therefore, enjoin all citizens to continue to pray, support, and cooperate with the present government to deliver on its mandate,” the speaker said.
Dogara also urged both Christians and Muslims to use both Christmas and Maulud to assist the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across the country.
Dogara, however, said the Federal Government and other local as well as international agencies were working hard to resettle the IDPs as soon as possible.
He said that the National Assembly was prepared to support the rebuilding of areas affected by the activities of Boko Haram.
