This Is What Nigerians Want From President Buhari’s Ministers

As President Muhammadu Buhari finally assigned portfolios to his ministers here are some of the areas where the people are yearning for the impact of change.

The incumbent government which was inaugurated on May 29 had been expected to hit the ground running given the about five-month waiting time it had to prepare itself.

Two Buhari’s predecessors Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan settled in pretty quickly.

Nigerians even gave their president nickname Baba Go Slow. However Buhari said that he would be slow and steady.

So the things Nigerians awaited are:

1. Stronger economy

Despite being the 3rd biggest economy in Africa, Nigeria ranks around 160th out of 177 countries on the scale of the Human Development Index.

The oil-dependent economy has been suffered by the sharp decrease in global oil prices. The process has also taken its toll on the naira, with the stock marker experiencing one of its worst times in history.

The newly sworn-in Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun is expected to give action plans on defending the naira without wearing the reserves out, while renewing other aspects of the economy and attracting foreign investors.

2. Social welfare

Nigeria had no social security system. Less than 1 percent of the population older than sixty years received pensions. Because of the younger age of urban migrants, there were fewer older people per family unit in urban areas.

The Buhari administration has pledged conditional cash transfer, which the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, said would be given to parents who put their children in school.

Nigerians expect the ministers to help the president deliver on its most controversial promises – N5,000 for unemployed youths and one meal a day for school children.

3. Employment opportunities

As a president-elect Buhari lamented that the years of decay had resulted in massive unemployment. To create jobs, Buhari said he would invest in agriculture and exploit the mineral resources sector.

Some statistics say that 24 % of Nigerians are unemployed. Buhari’s cabinet is expected to create the environment for entrepreneurship to prosper and to also initiate learning of skills in the curriculum of schools. Nigerians are expecting a big difference in this point.

4. Improved power supply

Nigeria is presently experiencing its worst energy crisis with the shortage of petroleum products and shortage of gas affecting upstream and downstream activities across the entire energy space. The provision of electricity is an area in which Nigerians will expect almost instant change and will be, without question, one of the most visible indices of the barometer for measuring the effectiveness of the new government.

Buhari has handed him the mantle to prove how easy it is to generate electricity and trust Nigerians, they are waiting to see how he would turn the situation around for the better.

5. Better security

Buhari Boko Haram

Innocent people continue to suffer various atrocities in the hands of Boko Haram in Nigeria, despite the country’s new leadership’s pledge to stop violence being committed by the extremist group.

At different campaign grounds, the ruling party blamed the Goodluck Jonathan government of inability to handle the insurgency and promised to make a huge difference.

Nigerians expect Buhari’s administration to look into these areas and bring about the desired change.
