Kabir Marafa who stated this through a point of order reiterated his stance while briefing journalists after plenary on Tuesday, November 10.

He insisted that Bukola Saraki must apologise to Nigerians saying his action was an abuse of constitutional powers and the Senate standing rules.

He went ahead to state that the Rule 100 says the chairman, vice chairman and members of special committees shall be appointed by the chairman of the committee. Anything here is going to be tyrannical.

“Order 1 says everything we do must be conducted in conformity with the rules book and anything done outside that is null and void.

“The senate increased the committees from 57 to 65. This is where laws are supposed to be respected. If we should treat our laws with impunity, then we have no business being here.

“I am from the North west and our representative cannot represent us because he flouted this rule.  The selection committee itself is defective,” he said.

He also faulted lopsidedness in the committee leadership adding that the committee that constituted the chairmen was not properly instituted.

The lawmaker also pointed out that the increase in standing committees is illegal adding that the Senate President did not consult with the selection committee before taking his decision.

He however distanced himself from claims that he was disgruntled with the committee he was chosen to head.

According to him, there are no committees constituted so far.

Suleiman Hunkuyi representing Kaduna North senatorial district who stood up in support of Marafa said “at the end of the day, there are issues bordering on regulations indicated on the committee.”

He said: “How do you refer to a committee on which it’s authenticity has been guided.”

Meanwhile, Dino Melaye representing Kogi West senatorial district complained about the funds  received from the Treasury Single Account (TSA) company called remittance.

He said they were given the contract to mop up federal government funds and one percent is supposed to go to the commission which amounts to 2.5 trillion Naira.

The matter was stood down to another legislative day.

The Senate also stood down the session for the rest of the legislative day to mourn the death of the clerk, Adedotun Durojaiye.

He passed on Friday after a brief illness.
