The chairman of the senate committee on drugs and narcotics, Philip Aruwa Gyunka on Thursday, November 26 2015 condemned the increasing use of illicit drugs by Nigerians.
Speaking against the backdrop of his inauguration as the Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, Gyunka stated that Nigeria needs capable and accountable regulatory policies that are responsive to the needs of Nigerian communities and the evolving methods of Nigerian drug traffickers.
Gyunka added that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) needs to develop stronger working relationships with agencies of the federal government like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to stay on the trail of drug money.
“You simply cannot thwart the drug trade without frustrating the dissemination and concealment of the drug money.

“United Nations research points to the fact that about 40 percent of cocaine is seized in between the production and utilization stages.
“However, all around the world, only about 0.5 percent of drug money is seized,” Gyunka said.
The senator representing Nasarawa north senatorial district said the best way to tackle this issue in the eighth senate is to establish laws to make it difficult for drug traffickers to launder their money.
“I believe that the new CBN restrictions on withdrawals and deposits will also go a long way towards ensuring that the dirty money from the drug trade is not washed clean in our banking system,“he said.
He added that according to research, 65 percent of Nigerian youths using drugs is to have a good time with their friends while 54 percent wants to experiment.
However, he said that Nigeria needs to combat the prevalence of drugs to ensure this generation does not create a breed that is addicted to drugs.
