Official: 25 hurt in collapse of concrete awning at school

OLIN, N.C. (AP) — An emergency medical services director says 25 people were injured when a concrete canopy collapsed on a group of high school band students gathered for a competition in North Carolina.

Dr. Howard Bell of Iredell Emergency Medical Services confirmed the total to reporters after the collapse Saturday at North Iredell High School in Olin, about 55 miles north of Charlotte. Officials said initial reports indicated a box truck hit one of the canopy supports and the awning then fell, hitting students underneath it.

Officials say at least one student was taken to a Winston-Salem hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries, but they didn"t provide further details.

The band competition was canceled and emergency personnel were on the scene later Saturday, dismantling the damaged section of canopy.
