Manchester United crashed out of the Capital One Cup after the Red Devils lost 3-1 on penalties to championship side, Middlesbrough.
United captain, Wayne Rooney along with Michael Carrick and Ashley Young failed to convert from the spot.
On a night when city neighbours, Manchester City thrashed Crystal Palace 5-1, United failed to show any real spark and did not do enough to win the game.
Both teams had plenty of chances but none could make it count in 90 minutes, so the game went into extra time but the score line did not change.
