B’Haram December Deadline Is A Motivation Not Condition – Expert

Nigerians have been advised not to see the December deadline by the President as a condition but a motivation in military terms to gear them up against the insurgency.

This was revealed in an exclusive interview with Akeem Bello from the institute of peace, security and governance, Ekiti state University, Ado Ekiti.

The security expert disclosed that the deadline is not like that in a competition.

He spoke much on his assessment of the war against terrorism in Nigeria since the advent of the President Muhammed Buhari administration, added that the change of the military leadership by President is the first step in the right direction in the fight against Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria.

Bello declared that the new leadership were selected on competence, straight record and they were given direct orders which motivated them to right actions.

He maintained that the insurgency will soon become a thing of the past in the country with the determination and sincerity of the government to surely tackle the situation and not necessarily politicised it.

According to him,”The end will soon come for the Boko Haram. The December deadline given is a motivation in military and not necessarily a condition that, if not met, amount to failure.

“This is just a motivation which could be met and if it fails, it will be extended and combat continues. It is not a deadline as in the case of competition.

” The past government has shown incompetency in fighting the insurgency.
This was justified when the former chief of defence staff, Badeh confirmed the incompetence of his leadership in an interview where he elucidated the different deceit he led others to dish out to Nigerians.

“Same incompetence led him and others to sacrifice the military officers who refused to commit suicide consequent upon unavailability of weapons Badeh had claimed had been purchased in collaboration with the former security adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

“Thanks to Femi Falana SAN,who came to the rescue of those military officers, they would have been murdered on the excuse of mutiny.

” When the present administration came on board, they demonstrated seriousness and sincerity to combat the Boko Haram. Mr President directed that the operational base of the military be moved to Northeast where the insurgents are having free days.

“This action provided the needed proximity and motivation by the military to swing into action. The chief of army staff relocated to Northeast. Not only relocated, but also train with the officers and ensured that the necessary needs of the officers were met unlike during former President Jonathan, who in my view, deliberately allowed the insurgents to flourish, until the last days of his office. It is only in Nigeria that fight against insurgent is politicised the way it happened in the last regime.

“President Buhari also solidified the security relationship with his neighbours by creating a workable collective security with Chad, Cameroon, Niger and also Benin republic.

“This commendable relationship provided the needed impetus to fighting the insurgents. The intelligence communities of Nigeria and those nations reached some understanding in the areas of exchanging intelligence. The security agencies of Nigeria and these nations also agreed on border control. This arrangements made life difficult for the insurgents to thrive like before. Consequent upon which, it was easy to block the sources of major supplies to Boko Haram. The supplier of petroleum product was arrested, the suppliers of food were arrested, the supplier of ammunition was also arrested; the producers of National ID cards were also arrested. These were possible as a result of the reinforced relationship between Nigeria and her neighbours which was motivated by President Buhari. This brought much respect for Nigeria and also enhanced her leadership role in Africa.

“So far, the direct combat bases of the insurgents have been destroyed. The battle has been taken to extremes of sambisa jungle. The insurgents have been distabilised and scattered. Many were killed, some arrested and some surrendered. Just like the case of Al-shabaab in Somalia, when the Somali military in collaboration with international forces defeated them (Al-shabaab), they resulted to guerilla warfare.

“Boko Haram has been debased in Nigeria. They have now broken into small unit cells of insurgents exploding IEDs on innocent citizens. It is a fact all over the world that counter-guerrilla warfare is difficult to tackle. Though, not unmanageable, it takes time to overcome. Relative peace has returned to the Northeast unlike when the Boko boys almost took over Maiduguri,” Bello said.

The security expert further advised that with the collaboration of international community, serious intelligence work and border control should be the next line of action.

“Investigation has shown that most of the members of the dreaded insurgents are not Nigerians. Though, they have many volunteers in Nigeria.

“Serious cultural and economic intelligence should be applied to get the remnants who are causing havoc on the people.

“Government should deploy equipment that will assist in detecting the IED’s before they are detonated. Government should ensure the sustenance of pressure on the insurgent at the ratio it is going.

“The Almajiri school system introduced by the last government should be reorganized in such a manner to engage the Malams who teaches the Almajiris in the local schools. This will assist in proper co-ordination of intelligence gathering by the Malams.

“The intelligence community should train locals for intelligence gathering. This will assist in fishing out the remnants of the insurgents,” he advised.
