Facebook Messenger is the most downloaded app (59.6 million) of 2016 so far, says a report in SurveyMonkey.

Facebook Messenger is the most downloaded app (59.6 million) of 2016 so far, says a report in SurveyMonkey. The site revealed data from SurveyMonkey Intelligence, which shows most-downloaded apps in the first six months of 2016 in the US. The detailed data has been collected from iOS and Android app stores. Pokemon GO app, however, isn’t on the list this time as it was released recently. The AR mobile game, which was unveiled on July 6, gained huge popularity across the world just within days of its launch. In fact, Pokémon GO app, in its first week, was downloaded more than any other app in the history on the Apple App Store.

Messenger was followed by Snapchat (54.5 million) and Facebook (45.8 million) apps bagging second and third positions. Snapchat has left behind the Facebook app in the first six months of 2016, thanks to its growing popularity. Instagram (40.4 million) and Color Switch (39.0 million) were fourth and fifth most downloaded apps in the US in 2016. Interestingly, Facebook-owned products including Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp dominated the top 15 slots with WhatsApp at 18.6 million downloads. Other most downloaded apps include Pandora at 27.3 million, YouTube at 22.9 million and Netflix at 21.3 million downloads.

SurveyMonkey also put a list of 30 most-used apps in 2016. “Unlike downloads, which just measures new users to an app, monthly active users captures how many people actually use an app, so it’s an effective, simple way to measure and compare relative app popularity,” says SurveyMonkey.

Facebook app is the most used mobile app in the US so far with 136.3 million Monthly Active Users (MAU). YouTube is very close at second position with 134.8 million MAU followed by Messenger (120.4 million MAU) and Google Maps. There’s Play Store and Google Search on fifth and sixth position with 93.4 million MAU 91.7 million MAU respectively. Google and Facebook dominate here with their products taking the top 9 slots in the most-used apps category. The list includes the most-used apps across Android and iOS.

Clearly, not even half of the the most-downloaded apps are featured on the most-used apps list. “This suggests that theses apps are either new entrants still building a user base, or they simply can’t retain the users that they acquire,” SurveyMonkey says. The site rightly points out that none of the most-used apps are games, even when more than one-in-five of the most downloaded apps were games. “This highlights the relatively low retention and hits-driven nature of mobile games,” says the site.
